Background of the Study
Fast food consumption has been steadily increasing in Nigeria, particularly in urban areas where busy lifestyles, convenience, and marketing strategies have made fast food outlets highly popular. Kwara State, a mix of urban and rural communities, is no exception to this trend. Fast foods are often characterized by their high fat, sugar, and sodium content, which are major contributors to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other nutrition-related diseases. The nutritional status of individuals, particularly children and young adults, is at significant risk due to the rising prevalence of fast food consumption. While fast food provides convenience, it often lacks essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber, necessary for a balanced diet. This study aims to evaluate the influence of fast food consumption on the nutritional status of the population in Kwara State. The findings will provide critical insights into how fast food consumption affects the overall health and nutritional status of residents and whether interventions are needed to address poor dietary habits.

Statement of the Problem
In Kwara State, the growing popularity of fast food, especially among young people, has raised concerns about its impact on nutritional health. While fast food offers convenience and taste, it is often associated with poor nutritional outcomes such as excessive calorie intake, poor micronutrient intake, and unhealthy weight gain. There is limited research on how fast food consumption specifically influences the nutritional status of residents in Kwara State, particularly with regard to obesity, malnutrition, and diet-related diseases. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the influence of fast food consumption on the nutritional status of the population in Kwara State, which could inform public health initiatives aimed at promoting healthier eating habits.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the frequency and types of fast food consumed by individuals in Kwara State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of fast food consumption on the nutritional status of individuals in the state.

  3. To recommend strategies to mitigate the negative effects of fast food on nutritional health in Kwara State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the frequency of fast food consumption in Kwara State?

  2. How does fast food consumption affect the nutritional status of individuals in the state?

  3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce the adverse effects of fast food on nutritional health in Kwara State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between the frequency of fast food consumption and poor nutritional status in Kwara State.

  2. Individuals who frequently consume fast food are more likely to experience obesity and other nutrition-related diseases.

  3. Implementing dietary interventions that promote balanced nutrition will significantly reduce the negative effects of fast food consumption in Kwara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on residents of Kwara State, specifically those aged 15-45 years. It will examine their fast food consumption patterns and the resulting effects on their nutritional status. The study is limited by the reliance on self-reported data, which may be subject to bias, and it does not account for other environmental factors that may influence nutrition, such as physical activity levels.

Definitions of Terms
